Is it okay to give a three year old horse weight supplements?
I have a three year old thoroughbred. He just turned three May 5th and he is really thin right now. He gets breakfast and dinner, but still isn't gaining weight. Would it hurt him to put him on a weight supp while he is so young?
Any horse only being fed twice a day is probably spending too many hours with an empty stomach.
Unlike humans, horse's stomachs continuously secrete acids regardless of whether or not food is entering the stomach. Horses are designed to have access to forage 24/7, and providing that is the best thing you can do for a myriad of reasons. They need the copious amounts of alkaline saliva that chewing hay stimulates in order to protect the mucosa of the digestive tract and prevent inflammation that prevents absorption of needed nutrients from feed. I would provide good quality grass mix hay with 25% alfalfa (legume hay) 24/7 rather than adding any weight gaining supplements. This will improve his digestion which in turn allows full absorption of nutrients in his feed so they are utilized as opposed to just being lost into stools. This will also serve to prevent gastric ulcers from forming, which is common in horses.
It would help to give you a better answer if you add what he is currently being fed at the two daily meals, and a history that includes whether or not he has been starved. The first ten days of feeding a starvation case are crucial, and after that a gradual program allowing a gain of no more than one pound a day is necessary to maintain optimum health.
The hay mix I recommend fed 24/7 is safe regardless for most horses. If there might be medical issues such as parasite loads, infections or dental problems, then a vet should be the one evaluating the horse and advising you on this. You don't want to overfeed a young, growing horse, and being on the thinner side is preferable as long as the horse is in good health and not emaciated. Sometimes you need a good equine vet to determine that for you.
