Importing a classic bike from Switzerland?

Need advice re customs and excise please.
I would like some advice please re importing a classic bike from Switzerland into the UK.
What costs are involved re customs and excise?
Could the bike be ridden here and then sold to me here?
What paperwork is necessary.
It would be a private sale so presumably does not involve VAT.
All advice would be appreciated.
Thanks
It is a 1960's bike and for personal use so would I have to pay VAT?

"What costs are involved re customs and excise?"
As Switzerland is not in the E.U. you will be looking at around 30% of the value of the bike for import duty and V.A.T.

"Could the bike be ridden here and then sold to me here?"
Yes. Or you could buy it there and ride it back here.

"What paperwork is necessary."
The Swiss ownership documents.

"It would be a private sale so presumably does not involve VAT."
See first answer.

"It is a 1960's bike and for personal use so would I have to pay VAT?"
Anything you import from outside the E.U. may be subject to a V.A.T. levy, regardless of its age or intended use.
